November 11, 2009, Veteran's Day. In this time of political and world drama, I thought it was important to take the kids to see something actually associated with the holiday so they wouldn't just think it was a day to picnic and get off from school.
Our friends the Thomas family have a son Joe that is currently serving as a Marine and just happened to be part of a Veteran's Day parade in Palm Springs. Being that I can't stand parades, and that we had "connections" due to Joe and the Thomas', we went over before the parade started and took a tour of all of the machinery that would be driving down the route. The kids sat in the tanks, pushed a few buttons, stood next to the gigantic clips and machine guns with awe, and literally stood eye to eye with the huge tank rounds. It was really cool that we got to go over and let the kids see what real war weapons and vehicles look like. I think it gave them an appreciation for how dangerous war is and that we really should celebrate those persons that participate and sacrifice to protect our country, our land, and our families.
